Overcoming the Past: the Danger of Guilt and Shame
Isn’t it strange that although the word “forgiveness” is said to be mentioned fourteen (14) times in the Bible – one of the hardest things we struggle with in our walk with CHRIST, is accepting GOD’s forgiveness. We live in a time where our generation is plagued with the shame of their past mistakes and choices that attempt to steal their joy of stepping into complete freedom.
I remember when I accepted CHRIST into my life years ago, I could quickly accept HIS love but when it came to accepting HIS forgiveness, it was hard. In my ignorance, I thought that the guilt and shame that came with my past superseded GOD’s ability to forgive me and see me beyond who I used to be. One of the enemy’s greatest strategies is to keep us distracted from GOD’s purpose for our lives and consumed with our past. So instead of taking vital daily steps in building a relationship with GOD- where we are constantly growing in HIS Word by hearing HIS voice, we get stuck in our yesterday.
In Romans 8:1-2, the Bible clearly lets us know that, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death”. I’ve quickly realised that the fruit of this truth can only be enjoyed once I give over the guilt and shame of my past to CHRIST and accept HIS forgiveness, unconditionally.
Guilt and shame were slowly starting to kill the JOY in my life and my ability to TRUST GOD for greater things in your life:
So, once I had decided that I had had a tea party with brother Guilt and sister Shame for far too long, I made the conscious decision to allow GOD to heal me from the past that so easily clouded my mind. I made a commitment to fill my thoughts with the Word of GOD, daily. I’ve taken what the enemy wanted to use to keep me in the past as a tool to encourage others that GOD not only forgives, but HE also restores (Revelations 12:11).
Our greatest work here on earth is to make GOD’s name great, and point others to HIM. Distractions such as guilt and shame have no place in our lives. May this be the first day of daily refusing to live in the past and choosing to rather live in the present and fully accepting the FREEDOM that was bought with the highest price.
